At 6 a.m., a field officer listens to a farmer describe a crop concern in Twi. The officer has several calls to log before the day’s visits begin. The case form is in English. A phrase that describes one visible change in a leaf becomes a broader English label, then a recommendation is prepared around that label.
By the time an agronomist sees the case, the farmer’s actual words may be gone. What remains is a short English summary that sounds familiar, fits a dropdown, and could still be wrong.
Meaning can be lost before the case reaches the expert
A field officer is often doing several jobs at once: listening, interpreting, documenting, and moving the call toward a useful next step. The pressure is understandable. But an English-first form can turn translation into an undocumented decision.
The risk is not limited to vocabulary. A farmer may describe where a symptom began, how it spread, what changed after rainfall, or what neighboring plants look like. Those details can shape the assessment. If the case record retains only a compressed English phrase, the agronomist cannot check what the farmer actually reported.

The issue was not that either unit was meaningless. Each had a defined meaning. The failure came from passing information between systems without preserving or correctly interpreting that meaning.
That is the useful analogy for a crop report that changes language before expert review. Twi and English are not competing units, and translation is far more complex than converting a number. The shared lesson is narrower: when a downstream decision depends on an upstream report, the receiving system needs a reliable way to retain, inspect, and interpret the original signal.
A case form that records “leaf problem” may be easy to route. It gives an agronomist little basis for checking whether the farmer described discoloration, damage, wilting, spread, or something else entirely.
